Dear Students,
You need to be able to write clear, well structured academic texts of certain lengths, with a high degree of accuracy in an appropriate style; and use various argument types appropriately, while demonstrating a good range of vocabulary in grammatically flawless English.
In my Masterclasses I work alongside and augment the public school curriculum, offering support, training, tips and advice on how to bridge the gap and fill any shortcomings related to academic language assignments, whether written or oral.
For example: you have been given the American English classic novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ as an assignment at school. Having read the book and revised the vocabulary list, you have a general understanding of the events, setting, characters and dialogue; although you may have encountered interpretation difficulties in areas such as lexis, semantics and grammar.
The follow-up assignment is a writing task, in this case an essay of about 250 words. It’s a challenge and demands new skills to interpret and analyse a literary text and write an essay in your own words, especially if your grasp of grammar, vocabulary and writing skills needs improving. I take you through these various exercises step by step, addressing your strengths and weaknesses, and discussing with you areas such as meaning, interpretation and story development, as well as step-by-step guidance, tips and advice on how to plan, write, and summarise texts, develop opinion and arguments in essays, summarise a chapter in a book, or give presentations in class to help you develop your writing skills.
In doing so I focus students' thinking and provide opportunities for them to demonstrate critical learning. I encourage students to consolidate their understanding of the texts, and challenge them to analyse the plot, characters and themes.
This process is punctuated by ‘grammar checkpoints’ which entail practice in areas like tense use, articles, modal verbs, conditional mood, reported speech, passive mood etc, as determined by the student’s individual needs. Strong emphasis is placed on revision and consolidation. I usually offer task-based activities giving students the opportunity to consolidate their understanding of how to use language fluently and accurately.
